mm lee's eulogy (also my 1st post thru bb)

SINGAPORE : Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said without his wife, Madam Kwa Geok Choo, he would be a different man with a different life.

Delivering his eulogy entitled "The Last Farewell to My Wife", Mr Lee said her last wish she shared with him was to enjoin their children to have their ashes placed together, as they were in life.

Mr Lee recounted the last two years of Madam Kwa's life.

He said they were the most difficult. Madam Kwa was bed-ridden after small successive strokes. She could not speak but she was still cognizant.

He said every night she would wait for him to sit by her to tell her of his day's activities and to read her favourite poems.

Then she would sleep.

Mr Lee said after her first stroke in 2003, Madam Kwa lost her left field of vision and this slowed down her reading.

She learned to cope, reading with the help of a ruler.

Madam Kwa also swam every evening and kept fit and continued to travel with Mr Lee and stayed active despite the stroke.

Mr Lee said Madam Kwa jocularly divided her life into "before stroke" and "after stroke", like BC and AD.

Madam Kwa's second stroke on 12 May 2008 was more disabling.

Mr Lee said he encouraged and cheered her on, helped by a magnificent team of doctors, surgeons, therapists and nurses.

On 24 June 2008, a CT scan revealed another bleed again on the right side of Madam Kwa's brain.

Mr Lee said there was not much more that medicine or surgery could do except to keep her comfortable.

Madam Kwa was brought home on 3 July 2008.

The doctors expected her to last a few weeks.

But she lived till 2 October, 2 years and 3 months.

Mr Lee said she remained lucid.

And that gave time for him and his children to come to terms with the inevitable.

Mr Lee said he has precious memories of their 63 years together, as she devoted herself to him and their children.

Mr Lee said Madam Kwa was always there when he needed her.

He said she had lived a life full of warmth and meaning.

Minister Mentor Lee said he should find solace at her 89 years of her life well-lived.

But at this moment of the final parting, Mr Lee said his heart is heavy with sadness.

The private funeral of Madam Kwa took place at the Mandai Crematorium on Wednesday evening.

Invited guests included the late Mrs Lee's family members, ministers, grassroots organisations and doctors & nurses. - CNA /ls
